Lima, Peru – February 3, 2025 – The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently banned the use of synthetic Red No. 3 in food and ingestible medications. This decision follows studies that have shown Red Dye 3 can induce cancer in male laboratory rats exposed to high doses. While the FDA states that this mechanism does not occur in humans, the ban is based on the precautionary principle to protect public health.
As part of this transition, U.S. manufacturers using this dye will have until January 15, 2027, to reformulate their food products and until January 18, 2028, to comply with the ban on ingestible medications.
In response to this regulatory change, carmine (E120), a natural colorant derived from cochineal, emerges as the safest and healthiest alternative for various industrial applications. It offers excellent stability, a vibrant red hue, and none of the health risks associated with synthetic dyes.
Imbarex, a Peruvian company and global leader in the production and export of natural colorants, has been supplying high-quality carmine to over 50 countries for more than 20 years, serving the food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries.
Many products currently containing Red No. 3 could easily be reformulated with carmine, eliminating potential health risks for consumers. Some of these products include:
- Flavored red beverages
- Assorted fruit candies and gummies
- Certain strawberry-flavored milks and yogurts
- Bakery products and snacks with red icing
Replacing Red No. 3 with carmine in these products would enhance their safety profile and meet the growing consumer demand for natural, non-harmful ingredients.
Imbarex remains committed to sustainability, ensuring that its carmine production respects the environment and supports local communities involved in the cultivation and harvesting of cochineal.
